The Bamar ( Burmese ဗမာလူမျိုး), also Burmese , Burmese , Bama, Myamma / Myanma, Myen (not to be confused with Mien / Yao ), are the largest ethnic group in Myanmar with around 32 million people , where they make up 69% of the population. They mainly practice Theravada Buddhism with animistic elements. Their language belongs to the Tibeto-Burmese languages of the Sinotibetan family .

Often the term is Burmese (English Burmese ), which can be misleading, however, since it actually refers to all citizens of the State of Myanmar (formerly Burma or Myanmar), including non-Bamar-minorities such as Karen , Shan and Kachin .

origin

The Bamar probably began to immigrate from Yunnan and Tibet to what is now Myanmar around 2000 years ago . Over the centuries they mixed and assimilated the local Austro - Asian Mon and became the dominant group. Records in Chinese chronicles state that the Bamar ruled a powerful kingdom and were a regional power in the 9th century. They competed with the Tai peoples and India for various areas outside what is now Myanmar (north-west Thailand and north-east India).

Culture

The culture of the Bamar shows parallels to other East Asian and Southeast Asian cultures.
