The Immanuel-Kant-Gymnasium Pirmasens ( IKGP ) is an old-language high school on the Horeb , a district of Pirmasens , Rhineland-Palatinate . The school is named after the German philosopher Immanuel Kant . The IKGP was founded in 1836 as a Latin school and is the oldest high school in the city.

history

In 1771 the first Latin school in the city of Pirmasens was founded - in the garrison school right next to the Luther Church - but had to be closed after 22 years of school operation during the French Revolutionary Wars . After the Palatinate fell to Bavaria in 1815 , a new, incomplete Latin school was approved in 1835 , which opened its doors on January 18, 1836 in the Bechtold building on Alleestrasse. At that time the school had two teachers who taught two classes. A year after the school was founded, a real class was added to the school , whose students were exempt from teaching Greek .

The rapid growth of the town of Pirmasens during the beginning of the era of the shoe industry meant that the Latin school became too small. On August 1, 1882, she moved to a larger building in the city center. In 1888, the real class was spun off into a secondary school and the Latin school was upgraded to a six-class Progymnasium . The students who wanted to do their Abitur had to go to a grammar school in Kaiserslautern after the sixth grade . At the urging of the Pirmasens citizens, the school administration elevated the Progymnasium in 1909 to a full humanistic high school with seven classes. A year later, a school reform ensured the addition of an eighth grade, after which the gymnasium, which had grown further, moved into the parade ground school building. In 1911 a ninth grade was added. At the beginning of the First World War in 1914, eight teachers and all ninth grade students volunteered , of which four teachers and 29 students died in the war.

With the change in the school system in the Weimar Republic , girls were allowed to attend grammar school for the first time after World War I in 1919. On September 1, 1939, the entire city and with it the school was evacuated; in August 1944 a bomb attack destroyed a large part of the parade ground school. At the beginning of 1945 the school had to be stopped after another bomb attack. After a makeshift repair of the school building, classes were resumed in 1946. In 1950 the school was renamed the Altsprachliches Gymnasium .

In 1960, the city council decided to build a new building on the Horeb in Wörthstrasse with the new name Staatliches Gymnasium (old language, modern language) Pirmasens, which was then renamed Immanuel Kant Gymnasium Pirmasens in 1976. 1975–1976 a three-story extension was built around the grown To accommodate number of students. In July 1995 the defective roof of the grammar school was renewed. In 2005/2006 the facade of the school was redesigned and the windows replaced. From 2009, 2.3 million euros from the economic stimulus package II were used to renovate the building.

Alignment and support association

In addition to the ancient languages Latin and Greek , the focus is also on the musical and creative area. The IKGP is one of only seven purely old-language grammar schools in Rhineland-Palatinate and is therefore in line with the trend that more and more students are choosing Latin as their first foreign language. From 1995/1996 to the 2007/2008 school year, the number of pupils at grammar schools with Latin as a foreign language in Rhineland-Palatinate rose from 104,106 to 134,445. The artistic and musical direction is realized by the theater group Prolögchen, which is known far beyond the city limits, as well as various other art-related projects in the fields of music and visual arts .

The association for the promotion of the Immanuel-Kant-Gymnasium Pirmasens eV was founded in 1936 as an association of friends and sponsors of the old-language grammar school . From donations and contributions from the 282 members (2004), 11,500 € were made available for school support in the 2003/2004 school year.
