Eugene Ludwig Rapp

Eugen Ludwig Rapp (born May 8, 1904 in Pirmasens , † May 16, 1977 in Mainz ) was a German Protestant theologian, orientalist and Africanist.

Life

After attending the Immanuel Kant grammar school in Pirmasens (1914–1923), he studied theology and history in Marburg in 1923/1924, and theology and oriental studies (Assyriology, Semitic Studies, Egyptology, Coptic) in Heidelberg from 1924–1926; here he acquired the qualification to teach Hebrew in 1926 . After a year of study in Utrecht in 1926/1927, where he studied theology, religious studies and oriental studies, he passed his first theological exam in Speyer in 1927 . After receiving his doctorate from Georg Beer in Heidelberg in 1929 as Dr. theol. he was vicar in the Palatinate (seminary Landau in the Palatinate , city vicariate Lauterecken , Oppau and Ludwigshafen-Friesenheim ) he passed the second theological exam in Speyer in 1930. In 1930, R. joined the Basel Mission and studied African studies with Diedrich Westermann and Islamic studies and phonetics in Berlin . He translated the Bible into Twi (1932–1935; 1936–1938).

From 1945 to 1949 he was pastor in Oberlustadt . From 1949 until his retirement in 1972 he taught as a professor for Christian Oriental Studies at the University of Mainz .
