The speed race became a sub-discipline of the Omnium in October 2016 and as such was formally codified for the first time by the Union Cycliste Internationale . According to these regulations, in the tempo race after a mass start and five laps, one point is awarded to the leader when reaching the finish line in each subsequent lap . In addition, there were initially four points and since 2017 20 points credit for each lap win by a driver compared to the main field. In the event of a lap loss compared to the main field, the affected driver is eliminated and loses his points. The winner is whoever has achieved the most points in the end. As part of an omnium, the distances are 10 km for men, 7.5 km for women and juniors and 5 km for juniors. Otherwise, the same rules apply as for the points race .

Until October 2016, tempo races that z. B. in the context of six-day races, points are often awarded to the first two drivers at the end of a lap.
