A finish line is a straight line used for measuring. The term is mainly used in two areas:

Sports

In sporting competitions , the finish line is applied across the arena on the track and thus visually marks the finish line. In simple cases it is observed by a referee with stopwatches or the finish line is recorded with a photo of the finish .

A light barrier is installed at the finish line for precise measurements . If the start also takes place in this way, time measurements with an accuracy of milliseconds (0.001 s) are possible.

geodesy

In geodesy and other geosciences, the straight line that represents the measuring beam . In the theodolite or tachymeter , the target line (also known as the target axis or sight ) is implemented by the crosshair and the optical axis of the telescopic sight. Target lines of this type can also be found on cameras , guns and other devices in which directions are to be measured or set optically precisely.
