The Palazzo Sansedoni is a building in the historic center of Siena , on Piazza del Campo .
History and description
The most notable private building on the piazza was constructed at the beginning of the 13th century, with nearly five private houses amalgamating and one of the entrances to the piazza closed. In 1339 Agostino di Giovanni directed the renovation and expansion of the complex to become Banchi di Sotto . The majestic brick facade of the square goes back to a renovation in the Gothic style in the 18th century by the architect Ferdinando Ruggieri .
On the curved facade, which follows the curvature of the square, there are three rows of windows with trifors and is crowned by battlements and a square tower. The tower was reduced in size in the Middle Ages because it could not be higher than the Torre del Mangia of the Palazzo Pubblico opposite .
Inside there are various rooms with decorations from the 18th century by Francesco and Giuseppe Melani and Giovanni Domenico Ferretti . Anton Domenico Gabbiani is responsible for decorating the ceiling in the private chapel with the glory of Blessed Ambrogio Sansedoni (1701).
Today the building houses the Fondazione Monte dei Paschi di Siena .
