Life

He is first mentioned in writing on September 11, 1310, when he married Lagina di Nese, probably a sister of the sculptor Cellino di Nese. With her he fathered Giovanni d'Agostino (* approx. 1311) and his younger brother Domenico di Agostino , who later became artists themselves. In the same year he was already listed as a Magister . Many of his late works were carried out with his son Giovanni, such as the Cappella Ghini ( Santa Maria della Pieve ) in Arezzo or various works in Serre di Rapolano (Chiesa dei Santi Lorenzo e Andrea). This also led to multiple mix-ups with the works of his son Giovanni. The Senese artist Tino di Camaino had a great influence on the work of Agostino . The most important individual works by the artist include the wooden statue of Sant'Ansano , created in 1321 , which is now in the Louvre , and the tomb of Cino da Pistoia , a marble work in the Cathedral of Pistoia , which was created in 1337.

One of his closest collaborators was Agnolo di Ventura (also called Agnolo da Siena ). In the biographies Le vite dei più eccellenti pittori, scultori e architetti by Giorgio Vasari , he is mentioned with Agnolo di Ventura under Vita di Agostino et Agnolo, Scultori et architetti sanesi . Vasari attributes them to Giovanni Pisano as their teacher and names them as architects of the church and the convent of the Basilica di San Francesco in Siena and of the same name in Bologna . The tombstones of the grave of Guido Tarlati in Arezzo Cathedral (Cattedrale di San Donato) are among the most important works of the two . The 16 tombstones were made in 1330 by order of the Brothers of the Different, Delfo and Pier Saccone Tarlati.

His most famous work in Siena is the street facade of the Palazzo Sansedoni , which runs along the Via Banchi di Sotto. The facade work was commissioned by Gontieri di Goro Sansedoni and was under the direction of Agostino di Giovanni, his collaborators were the Senese architects Agostino di Rosso and Cecco di Casino. The work was carried out in 1340 and 1341.

The exact date of the artist's death is unknown; in the documents he is listed as dead on June 27, 1347.
