Giovanni Domenico Ferretti (* 1692 in Florence ; † 1768 there ) was an Italian painter and is considered one of the most important fresco and canvas painters of the Tuscan Rococo . The painter Giovanni Domenico Ferretti should not be confused with the sculptor Domenico Ferretti (1702–1774).

Life

Since he came from an Emilian family, Ferretti apprenticed to Francesco Chiusuri in Imola . His first major commission was to design the Imola Cathedral. Ferretti returned to Florence with a letter of recommendation from the Bishop of Bologna , Ulisse Gozzadini . There he painted frescoes in many smaller churches and private chapels.

Larger commissioned works were, for example, those in the Badia Fiorentina (a monastery). Works can also be found in Pistoia , Siena and Pescia . His main work is the ceiling decoration in the church of Santa Maria del Carmine in Florence, on which he worked until his death. In 1771, three years after his death, the work was completely destroyed by fire.
