Domenico Ferretti
Domenico Ferretti (born November 29, 1702 in Castiglione d'Intelvi , † January 26, 1774 in Stuttgart ) was an Italian sculptor. From 1748 he worked for the Württemberg Duke Karl Eugen , mainly for the sculptural decoration of the New Palace in Stuttgart, from 1762 as a figure modeler for the Ludwigsburg porcelain factory . The sculptor Domenico Ferretti should not be confused with the painter Giovanni Domenico Ferretti (1692–1768).
life and work
Domenico Ferretti was born in Castiglione d'Intelvi in 1702 as the son of the sculptor and plasterer Carlo Ferretti . The small town of Castiglione is located between Lake Lugano and Lake Como in the Val d'Intelvi valley , where many artists and artist families come from. Domenico Ferretti and his father also came from a family of sculptors, plasterers and painters.
Domenico Ferretti worked as a sculptor at Ansbach Castle and at the collegiate basilica in Ansbach's neighboring parish of Herrieden in 1734 and 1735 . Before he was called to Stuttgart in 1748, he worked for a while in Vienna. In Stuttgart he carried out the sculptural work on the main gable , the garden gable and the 59 roof figures of the New Palace , a mammoth work that he completed in 1751. In 1750 he created putti, trophies and herms for the conversion of the New Lusthaus into an opera house, in 1759 two stucco altars for the Church of St. Thekla in Welden and after 1760 two naiad figures for the Monrepos Castle . From 1762 to 1764 he worked, like his father before, at the Residenzschloss Ludwigsburg , for which he created groups of putti and trophies.
From 1762 to 1767 Domenico Ferretti worked as a figure modeler for the Ludwigsburg porcelain manufactory . Many figures and groups of figures were created that are reminiscent of his sculptural works for the New Palace and Ludwigsburg Palace, for example river gods and mythological scenes, often garnished with putti.
Domenico Ferretti was married three times. The marriages produced two sons and a daughter. The poor and often late payment by the Duke brought Ferretti into financial difficulties that even brought him to court in 1767 and 1768. In 1773 he submitted a request for help to the Duke, but the decision was negative. A year later, death delivered him. He died in Stuttgart on January 26, 1774.

Two naiads (copies) rest on high stone plinths and a thick plinth to the right and left of the sea steps of the Monrepos lake castle in Ludwigsburg. The bodies are aligned with the feet towards the lake.
The left naiad is lying on a rock, facing the lake and half turned towards the stairs. With her right arm she supports herself on a lying vessel, the bottom of which faces the stairs. The main hair of the naiad is long and richly curled. A cloth covers her pubic so that the upper body, stomach and one leg remain bare. The right naiad sits on a stool-like stone cube. Her head hair is long and curly. She turns her back, bare down to her buttocks, to the passerby. Half of the naiad's right arm is broken off. A cloth covers the hips, pubic area and one leg. At the feet of the naiad a naked putto stands facing the stairs. He turns his gaze up to the naiad, who returns his gaze. To the right of the stool is a small coat of arms with an eagle symbol. |
