Steinbühl-Schäfergraben is the name of a 67 hectare nature reserve north of Kirchheimbolanden in the Donnersbergkreis in Rhineland-Palatinate .
history
The site of today's nature reserve was initially used as a quarry , where porphyry was mined by the operator at the time . The original plans provided for the site to be used as a commercial area after backfilling; However, after investigations found a great diversity of species on the site, the Donnersbergkreis, the nature conservation authority, designated the area as a nature reserve in 1998.
However, with the onset of scrub, the area threatened to develop into a forest and lose its biodiversity. Since the area was too large for permanent maintenance by humans, a decision was made in a pilot project to graze the area with grazing animals.
For this purpose, Taurus cattle and Konik wild horses were released on the site in 2007 . The grazing was successful and so the Steinbühl project serves as a model for numerous other grazing projects throughout Germany.
