The county is located north of the geographic center of Iowa and covers an area of 1,496 square kilometers, of which two square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history
Hamilton County was formed on January 8, 1857 from former parts of Webster County. It was named after William W. Hamilton , then President of the Senate of Iowa.
