history

On July 15, 1859, Williams H. Merrit founded a town called Mettamora on his own land. He laid out 121 parcels, some of which he sold to investors in the eastern United States, but otherwise the new town on the prairie aroused little interest. The chief planner for the Dubuque and Sioux City Railroad finally went to Williams to get permission to run the railroad over the land of Merrits. Eventually Blair laid out a town about three kilometers north of Mettamora, which he named after Major William Williams of Fort Dodge . The first post office in the new settlement opened on October 13, 1869, even before Williams was officially registered, and the first postmaster - a man named Isaac Brown - was also the first railroad employee. Williams was incorporated as a town on October 22, 1883, and BF Corbin was elected the city's first mayor. There were doubts about the legality of the founding act and the incorporation was initially revoked in 1884.

The first school opened in 1870 and was about 1 kilometer from Williams. A new school was built opposite the Harrison Hotel in 1875. It only had one room, like many schools in Hamilton County. It was replaced by a new building in 1881 and due to lack of space a larger school building was built in the east of the city in 1893. This was used until 1918. After that, a high school was built in the southern part of Williams. This was expanded in 1957 to include a sports hall and an auditorium. In the 1960s the schools of Blairsburg, Kamrar and Williams were reorganized and the school operations were relocated to Blairsburg.

traffic

Williams was on the Dubuque and Sioux City Railroad, which eventually became part of the Illinois Central Railroad. At the beginning of the 1920s, a country road was built on the south side of the municipality with federal funds. The so-called Grant Highway was later renamed Hawkeye Highway and eventually became a section of US Highway 20 , which leads east to Alden . Eventually the highway was expanded to four lanes and the old route was designated as Iowa State Route 928 . The inner-city streets in north-south direction are named after trees, the three east-west axes are numbered consecutively.
