history

Hancock

Hancock County was formed on January 15, 1851. It was named after John Hancock (1737-1793), one of the signatories of the US Declaration of Independence and President of the Continental Congress .

In 1858, the first elections were held in Hancock County. The first administrative seat was in the Amsterdam Township and a court and administrative building was planned, but this was reversed by a change of government in the county. Until 1865 a school house in the Amsterdam Township was used for the county administration.

The administration was later moved to Concord Township and two small wooden buildings were built for the county administration. In 1867 the desire arose to build a stone building for the county government and local jurisdiction, which was turned over in 1869.

Although the county’s administrative headquarters were still in Concord Township, a decision was made in the town of Garner to build a new brick courthouse, which was completed in 1899. In 1903, the county administration finally moved to Garner, which is still the seat of the administration of Hancock County today.

9 of the county's structures are on the National Register of Historic Places .
