Forest City is a city (with the status " City ") and the administrative seat of Winnebago County in the US -amerikanischen State Iowa . Much of the urban area extends into neighboring Hancock County to the south . In 2010 , Forest City had 4,151 residents, which decreased to 4,002 by 2013.

Forest City is located in northern Iowa on the Winnebago River , which forms part of the Mississippi River basin through the Shell Rock River , the Cedar River and the Iowa River . This forms the border between Iowa and Wisconsin around 220 km east ; the Minnesota border runs approximately 17 miles north.
The geographical coordinates of Forest City are 43 ° 15'45 "north latitude and 93 ° 38'14" west longitude. The city covers an area of 12.02 km² and is spread over the Forest Township of Winnebago County and the Madison Township of Hancock County.
Neighboring towns to Forest City are Leland (8.7 km north), Fertile (19.3 km east), Garner (13.2 km south), and Crystal Lake (17.1 km west southwest).

The US Highway 69 runs north-south direction as the main road through Forest City and meets north of the center of the Iowa State Highway 9 . All other roads are subordinate country roads, some unpaved roads and inner-city connecting roads.
Forest City is the northern terminus of a branch line for freight traffic on the Union Pacific Railroad (UP).
With the Forest City Municipal Airport there is a small airport in the south of the urban area. The nearest commercial airport is the Waterloo Regional Airport , from where there is a connection to the major Chicago O'Hare airport via feeder flights .
