Stratford is located in northwest central Iowa on the left bank of the Des Moines River , a right tributary of the Mississippi . The Minnesota border runs about 150 km north; the intersection of the states of Iowa, South Dakota and Nebraska on the Missouri is about 230 km west of Stratford.
