Stratford is located in northwest central Iowa on the left bank of the Des Moines River , a right tributary of the Mississippi . The Minnesota border runs about 150 km north; the intersection of the states of Iowa, South Dakota and Nebraska on the Missouri is about 230 km west of Stratford.
The geographical coordinates of Stratford are 42 ° 16'17 "north latitude and 93 ° 55'38" west longitude. The city extends over an area of 4.95 km² and is spread over the Marion Township of Hamilton County and the Hardin Township of Webster County.
