The Little Sioux River is a left tributary of the Missouri River . It originated in southwest Minnesota near the Iowa border . It flows in a south-westerly direction across northwestern Iowa and flows into the Missouri River after 415 km at Little Sioux . The Little Sioux River was called Eaneah-waudepon or Stone River by the Sioux Indians . Its tributaries include the Ocheyedan River , the Maple River, and the West Fork of the Little Sioux River . The Little Sioux River is an integral part of the Nepper Watershed Project , a flood control project in Iowa that was founded in 1947 to regulate runoff and protect farmland from flooding and erosion.
