A power plant ship (English: Power Barge ) is a power plant that is built on floating pontoons or another raft or ship and can be moved between destinations in order to be able to produce electricity in ports or near the coast.

Since a high energy density is required for such power plants , compact gas turbines , but also diesel engines or gas engines , can be used as prime movers . Often the gas turbine is followed by a waste heat boiler that feeds a steam turbine ; this creates a floating combined cycle power plant . Steam turbines that are supplied by a conventionally fired or nuclear steam generator are used less often.

Between 1954 and the early 1970s, the US Army developed floating nuclear power plants as part of the Army Nuclear Power Program . The first ship of this type was the Sturgis (MH-1A) . There were and are similar efforts in Russia (→ Russian floating nuclear power plant ).
