Wolfgang Viebig

Wolfgang "Fips" Viebig (born January 26, 1940 ) is a former table tennis player of the GDR. He was GDR champion six times and team champion seven times.

National successes

Viebig from Leipzig was one of the best players in the GDR in the 1960s. With the SC Lokomotive Leipzig and the successor clubs SC Leipzig and BSG Lokomotive Leipzig-Mitte he won the GDR team championship seven times in a row from 1961 to 1967. With the SC Lokomotive Leipzig he reached the final of the European Cup in the 1960/61 and 1964/65 seasons .

In 1963, 1966 and 1971 Viebig was GDR individual champion. In 1969 he won the title in doubles with Bernd Pornack and in 1974 and 1975 in mixed with Petra Stephan . There are also twelve second places: 1963, 1966, 1971 in singles, 1964 (with Dieter Lauk ), 1970, 1971 (with Bernd Pornack), 1983 (with Dieter Stöckel ) in doubles and 1964, 1965 (with Elke Richter ), 1972, 1973, 1976 (with Petra Stephan) in mixed. In 1965, he was ranked second in the GDR.

After the end of his career, Viebig often competed in senior tournaments. In 2003 he became German Senior Champion 60+.

Today Viebig plays at SV Eintracht Leipzig Süd.

International

The GDR association nominated Viebig in 1963 for the world championship , where he reached ninth place with the GDR team.
