Wang Chen (table tennis player)
Wang Chen (born January 17, 1974 in Beijing ) is a former Chinese and now American table tennis player who became Asian and world champions with the Chinese team.
Career in China
Wang Chen first came into contact with table tennis at the age of seven and joined a club. Because of her talent, she left school two years later and went to a sports boarding school. As an eleven-year-old she was part of the junior national team. In 1989 she won the title with the team at the Asian Junior Championships, in doubles with Wu Na she reached the final.
In 1992 she took part in the Asian Championships for adults for the first time and reached the semi-finals in singles. At her second participation in 1996 she won three medals: silver in singles and doubles (with Wu Na ), gold with the Chinese team. She was nominated twice for participation in the world championships . In 1995 she won bronze in singles, in 1997 she became world champion with the Chinese team. At the 1996 World Cup she came third.
In the ITTF world rankings , Wang Chen finished fourth in late 1997.
When she was not considered for the 1996 Summer Olympics and participation in 2000 appeared unlikely, she withdrew from the Chinese national team in 1998 and ended her international career for the time being. She now played for several European clubs and moved to her sister in New Jersey in the United States in 2000 .
Time in the united states
After a break, Wang Chen appeared again in tournaments, such as Pro Tour tournaments. In 2006 she received American citizenship and was therefore eligible to play on the national team. In 2006 and 2007 she was North American individual champion, in 2007 and 2008 she started at the World Championships. In 2008, she also took part in the Olympic Games in Beijing, where she reached the quarter-finals in the individual and finished fifth with the American team, which consisted exclusively of women born in China with Guo Jun, Crystal Huang and Wang Chen.
In August 2008, Wang Chen announced the end of her career.
