Josef Böhm (table tennis player)

Josef Böhm (born April 2, 1960 in Romania ) is a former German-Romanian table tennis player . He became German champion in doubles in 1984.

Time in Romania

Josef Böhm is the older brother of the more successful table tennis player Georg Böhm . He is the son of a couple of doctors who were born in Romania. His father played table tennis in the Romanian first division. His father's ancestors come from Swabia and emigrated to Romania in 1735.

Josef initially played stronger than his brother. From 1976 both were trained by national coach Farkas Paneth . Josef qualified for the European Youth Championship in Vichy in 1977, where he was eliminated in the third round against the Estonian Igor Solopov . At the national Romanian championships he finished second in singles in 1978 (behind his brother), in doubles he won the title together with Georg in 1977 and 1978. With the team CSM Cluj he was champion in 1977, 1978, 1979 and 1980.

Since 1977 he shifted his focus to medical studies. In December 1981 he emigrated to Germany with his parents, following his brother Georg, who had already moved to Germany in 1980. Today he works as chief physician in neurology.

In 1982 Böhm joined the Bundesliga club ATSV Saarbrücken , with whom he won the German team championship in 1983, 1984 and 1985. He repeated this success in 1987 with TTC Zugbrücke Grenzau . In 1989 he moved to VfB Lübeck , 1991 to Hertha BSC , 1994 to TVB Nassau, 1995 to TTC Elz. At the national German championships he won the title twice: 1984 in doubles with Georg Böhm , 1986 in mixed with Olga Nemes .
