Vörös Meteor Budapest ( Hungarian Budapesti Vörös Meteor ) was a Hungarian sports club from Budapest , which is best known for its ice hockey , handball and table tennis departments . The club's ice hockey team played in the highest Hungarian ice hockey league, OB I bajnokság , from the late 1940s to 1970 .

The club was founded in 1948 as Meteor Mallerd and was one of the most successful Hungarian ice hockey clubs from the beginning of the 1950s to the beginning of the 1960s. During this time Vörös Meteor won a total of five Hungarian championships - 1950, 1952, 1957, 1959 and 1963 - and was also one of the best teams in the league in the other seasons.

The club began to decline in the mid-1960s, culminating in 29 losses from 30 games in the 1969/70 season . The association was then dissolved.

Well-known former players

Handball

The club's men's handball team was one of the top Hungarian teams in the 1950s, winning the Hungarian championship in 1951, 1954, 1955 and 1957 . The women's handball team won their only Hungarian championship title in 1952.

basketball

The women's basketball team was established in 1949 and won the Hungarian championship in 1958, 1961 and 1970. In 1975, the basketball division of Vörös Meteor merged with that of MTK Budapest . In 1997 this merged team was disbanded.

Table tennis

The teams of the table tennis department regularly took part in the European Cup in the 1960s and won several Hungarian championship titles in singles, doubles and as a team (1957–1962 and 1964).
