Ursel Fiedler
Ursel "Uschi" Fiedler (born November 8, 1934 in Berlin ) is a former German table tennis player . She won the German championship twice in singles and three times in doubles.
Career
Uschi Fiedler only started playing table tennis when she was 16 years old. At the age of 17 she was second at the German youth championships (1952 in Hanover). In 1958 she was the first German champion before Hannelore Schlaf in Neumünster . She repeated this success in Freiburg in 1962 when she defeated Inge Harst in the final. Together with Hannelore Schlaf, she won the German doubles championship three times in a row from 1956 to 1958.
Between 1955 and 1962 she was invited to the national team 36 times. She took part in a table tennis world championship three times, and twice in a European championship. In 1962 she was European champion with the German team in Berlin.
From 1956 to 1959 she was in second place in the German rankings and 11th in the European rankings in 1962.
In 1962 she ended her career in competitive sports. She has been a member of the Ottobrunn Association since 1973 and is dedicated to working with young talent.
Private
Uschi Fiedler has been married to table tennis player Günter Matthias , the GDR master from 1952 , since 1959. Since then she has performed under the name Uschi Matthias . She lives in Ottobrunn and taught table tennis at the local high school. Her son Carsten became German doubles champion in 1987. Her daughter Christiane also plays table tennis, in 1986 with TTC Perlach in the 2nd Bundesliga.
