Günter Matthias
Günter Matthias (born March 23, 1934 in Stendal ; † June 2015 ) was a German table tennis player . He won a title five times at GDR championships.
GDR before 1957
Matthias played in the Lok Stendal club from 1948, and in 1954 he moved to SC Motor Berlin , with whom he was GDR team champion in 1956 and 1957. During this period he already had several successes in GDR championships: GDR champion in singles in 1952, in doubles in 1954 (with Lotar Schleener ) and 1957 (with Helmut Hanschmann ), vice championships in 1956 in doubles (with Hans Täger ) and 1957 in singles .
At the table tennis world championship in 1953 he was only registered for the individual competitions. In 1955 he reached 9th place with the all-German team. Overall, he played 40 internationals for the GDR from 1948 to 1957 and three internationals in an all-German national team in 1955. For his successes he was awarded the title of Master of Sports .
West after 1957
At the beginning of 1957 Günter Matthias moved with the approval of the GDR authorities from Grünau to West Berlin-Steglitz and married the West German table tennis player Uschi Fiedler here in 1958 . He joined the TTC Grün-Weiß Berlin club and took part in the national German championship as early as 1957 and 1959 , where he reached 3rd place. In 1959 he was invited to the individual competitions of the World Cup .
In 1964 the family moved to Hanover and strengthened Arminia Hanover, in 1966 they moved to SV Ahlem. In 1972 the company moved to Ottobrunn.
Private
Günter Matthias studied precision engineering. He has two children who also play table tennis successfully: son Carsten became German double champion in 1987, daughter Christiane played in the 2nd Bundesliga in 1986 .
