German table tennis championship 1957
The 25th national German table tennis championship took place on January 26th and 27th, 1957 in Berlin in the Schöneberg sports hall .
Conny Freundorfer became German champion in men's singles for the fifth time in a row with a 3-1 win over Erich Arndt in the final . For the first time, Freundorfer lost a set in a final. He overtook the previous four-time champion Dieter Mauritz and was thus the record champion so far. As in the previous year, Freundorfer also won the doubles title, but this time with Leopold Holusek . In the women's final, Erna Brell unexpectedly defeated defending champion Hannelore Schlaf . In doubles, Hannelore Schlaf / Ursel Fiedler defended by winning the final against Helga Engelke / Ilse Lantermann . Got the mixed titleJosef Wenninghoff / Ursula Paulsen in front of the Leopold Holusek / Friedel Holusek couple. The defending champions Conny Freundorfer / Hannelore Schlaf failed in the round of 16 against Götz Schulz / Wiltrud Steinbach.
As in 1955, no GDR activists took part, but Günter Matthias , who moved from the GDR to the West in early 1957, took part.
All games were played in the best-of-five mode (three sets of wins).
