Ernst Gomolla

Ernst Gomolla (born April 7, 1935 in Beuthen ) is a former German table tennis player . He was twice German champion in doubles.

National

Gomolla initially played for 12 years in the MTV Salzgitter club, with whom he won the North German Championship six times and the German Cup in 1960. In 1964 he moved to VfL Osnabrück and won the German team championship in 1966 and 1968. In 1969 the team won the German Cup. In 1971 he joined the TTC Blau-Weiß Datteln, where he ended his active career in 1989.

Gomolla was represented at all 25 national German championships from 1954 to 1978 . With his twin brother Herbert - both were defenders - he became German champions in doubles in 1959 and 1965. In 1965 and 1966 he won the mixed competition with Edit Buchholz . He was runner-up in doubles in 1969 with Eberhard Schöler . In season 1961/62 he finished in the national ranking tournament in second place.

International

From 1959 to 1968 Gomolla played 23 international matches. He took part in world championships five times . He won bronze with the German team in 1963 .

In 1962 , 1964 and 1968 he was nominated for the European Championship , where he reached the quarterfinals in doubles in 1962 and 1964 (with Eberhard Schöler ). Refrained from participating in the EM in 1966 in order to avoid loss of earnings.

End of career

In 1989 he said goodbye to competitive sports, but in the 1980s he still competed with Datteln in the 2nd Bundesliga. He then played tennis and traveled several times to the senior table tennis world championships. In 1982 he became double world champion with Peter Huebner in the over 40 age group, and in 1986 he won the singles title in the over 50 group.

Private

In addition to twin brother Herbert (with whom he was twice German champion in doubles) Gomolla also had a younger sister Rosemarie , who was two-time German champion in women's singles. He worked as an employee at the sports department of the city of Datteln . He was married since 1965. He retired at the age of 63. Since then he has lived in Datteln.
