Peter Ensign

Peter Fähnrich (born December 15, 1943 ) is a former table tennis player of the GDR . He was three times GDR champion and twelve times team champion.

successes

Ensign was one of the best players in the GDR in the 1960s and 1970s. With BSG Außenhandel Berlin he won the GDR team championship twelve times from 1970 to 1982, the team only finished second in 1976.

1970 and 1972 ensign was GDR master in mixed with Doris Hovestädt , in 1975 he won the title in doubles with Bernd Raue . There were also eight other finals: 1967, 1968 and 1977 in singles, 1967 and 1971 in mixed with Doris Hovestädt and in doubles in 1965 (with Bernd Pornack ), 1973 (with Heinz Schneider ) and 1974 (with Bernd Raue).

The GDR association nominated ensign in 1964 for the European championship and in 1965 for the world championship , where he reached 15th place with the GDR team.

disability

In 1989 ensign was hit by a motorcyclist. Ensign's right lower leg was injured so badly that he was unable to walk as a result. Since then he has appeared in tournaments for the disabled and achieved numerous successes. Several times he won the German championship in individual and team competition. In 2000 he became German champion in doubles, in 1999 he won bronze with the team at the European championship and reached fourth place in singles. In 1996 he started at the Paralympics in Atlanta and won a bronze medal with the team in group 9 10. For this he and all German medalists were awarded the silver laurel leaf . He was also a participant in the 2002 Disability World Cup in Taiwan.

After the accident, ensign played for the clubs MTTV Violetta (district league) (around 1997), Paralympic SC Berlin (around 2001 to around 2005), SV Bau-Union Berlin (around 2008), and from 2009 at TTV Friedrichsfelde.
