Wolfgang Stein

Wolfgang Stein (born October 21, 1943 ) is a former table tennis player of the GDR. He was GDR champion six times and team champion five times.

The left-hander Stein was one of the best players in the GDR in the 1960s. He began his career in 1963 at BSG Carl Zeiss Jena , with whom he played in the GDR league until 1970 and won the GDR team championship in 1967/68 and 1968/69. In 1970 he switched to BSG Elektronik Gornsdorf . With this club he was three times champion, namely in 1984/85, 1985/86 and 1988/90.

From 1965 to 1967 Stein won the GDR championship title in doubles three times in a row, in 1965 with Lothar Pleuse , then twice with Heribert Zitzmann. In 1967 and 1968 he won the title in singles, in 1969 in mixed with Doris Hovestädt .

The GDR association DTTV nominated Stein in 1964 for the European championship and in 1965 and 1967 for the world championship.

After the 1990/91 season with BSG Elektronik Gornsdorf in the Second Bundesliga, Stein ended his active career as a competitive athlete and founded a table tennis shop in Chemnitz-Rabenstein , which he still operates today. In 1994 he became a member of the regional division Lok Chemnitz.

In the 2011/2012 season, Stein serves for the 3rd team of the SG Handwerk Rabenstein amateur club in the lowest division.
