Wolfgang Schmidt (table tennis player)

Wolfgang Schmidt is a former German table tennis player . He was a three-time GDR champion in the 1950s and 1960s.

Career

Schmidt played for the SC Motor Jena club , later BSG Carl Zeiss Jena . With his men's team, he was GDR team champion in 1959 and 1968. In 1964 he and Dieter Schindler won the GDR doubles championship. Further successes at the GDR championships were third place in singles in 1962 and 1964, third place in doubles with Hans-Jürgen Ries in 1966 and reaching the final in mixed with Sigrun Legler in 1966.

In 2008 he became senior world champion in men's singles in the over 65 class and world champion in men's doubles with Herbert Neubauer . Today (2017) he plays for the club BSC Freiberg in the Sachsenliga.
