Founded in 1146 in the Ufer castle donated by the previous owners , the monastery was just about to give up in 1185, so that the General Chapter of the Cistercians sent a second founding team to Wilhering. These monks began building the first stone church in 1195. The monastery was abandoned around 1585, but it was successfully repopulated during the Counter Reformation . After a fire in 1733, the church was rebuilt in the most cost-effective way according to plans by the Linz master mason Johann Haslinger. The overall plan of the furnishings, presumably by Andreas Altomonte, was implemented by various artists, including Bartolomäo and probably Martino Altomonte , and masters from Austria and Bavaria. They managed to create the most outstanding Rococo work in Austria.
