From November 1944 onwards, thousands of Jewish concentration camp prisoners were used as slave labor in the construction of the south-east wall . Some of the survivors were driven in March and April 1945 via Graz, Leoben, Eisenerz through the Ennstal to Steyr and from there via Hargelsberg to Mauthausen. On these death marches, prisoners were murdered by the guards for the slightest of reasons. There are reports on this from many places along the transport routes.

The parish church is a Gothic hall church and consists of a two-bay choir with a three-eighth end and a ribbed vault. The nave has three bays, a main aisles and two narrow aisles with slender octagonal pillars. In 1883 the church was enlarged considerably and furnished in the style of the time. In 2007, the Monument Preservation Prize of the Federal Monuments Office went to the Hargelsberg parish for the exemplary restoration of this neo-Gothic interior and furnishings.
