Dang Qiu ( Chinese  邱党 ; * 29. October 1996 in Nuertingen ) is German table tennis - national team . He finished second in singles at the 2017 European Under-21 Championship. He is the first national player born in Germany to play penholder style.

Career

Dang Qiu comes from a table tennis family that today (2017) runs a table tennis school in Nürtingen. His father Qiu Jianxin , a former Chinese national player, was student world champion in 1987, played in the Bundesliga and was a coach at TTC Frickenhausen . His mother Chen Hong was also part of the Chinese national team and played in the Bundesliga. The older brother Liang Qiu also serves in the Bundesliga.

Although Dang Qiu's father, himself a penholder player, initially recommended the shakehand style, Dang Qiu later switched his game to penholder. This makes him the first national penholder player born in Germany.

International success was already achieved in his youth. In 2010 he won bronze at the European Schools Championship in singles. A year later he became German student champion in singles and doubles with Maikel Sauer, and he also became European champion in student doubles with the Czech David Reitspies. In the ranking tournament Europe TOP-10 of the pupils he came in second place. In 2017 he won silver at the U21 European Championships in singles behind Croatian Tomislav Pucar.

In January 2017, Dang Qiu played his first international match. In qualifying for the 2017 European Championships against Serbia, he lost 3-0 to Dragan Subotic.

Dang Qius began his club career in 2014 in the second team of the TTC Frickenhausen (2nd Bundesliga). In the 2015/16 season he played for the second division club TTC Ober-Erlenbach (TTC OE Bad Homburg), after which he was signed by the first division club ASV Grünwettersbach , for whom he achieved a score of 5: 6 in the first season. His contract has now been extended to 2020. At the Japan Open 2017, he made it to the semi-finals in the U21 competition, winning his first World Tour medal. In doubles with Benedikt Duda , he was German champion in 2018 and 2019, and in 2019 he also reached the singles semi-finals, which he lost 2: 4 to Timo Boll . With a surprising victory over defending champion Borussia Düsseldorf , he also reached the 2018/19 cup semi-finals with Grünwettersbach . In April he moved into the top 100 in the world rankings for the first time and received a starting place for the first time in the world championship , in which he reached the main round and was eliminated there against Lin Yun-Ju . In doubles with Duda, he also won silver at the Japan Open and German Open 2019, after they eliminated Chuang Chih-Yuan / Chen Chien-An and thus the 2013 world champions in both tournaments . This qualified them for the Grand Finals , in which they were defeated by Timo Boll and Patrick Franziska .

With Grünwettersbach, Qiu surprisingly won the cup competition in 2020 . In February 2020 he won the Portugal Open and on the way to the finals defeated Robert Gardos , who came third in the Europe Top 16 Cup , so that he was among the top 50 in the world rankings with 48th place for the first time.
