Bernhard Thiel

Bernhard Thiel (born September 30, 1953 ) is a German table tennis player . In the 1980s he was one of the best players in the GDR.

Career

Thiel played for FC Carl Zeiss Jena in the 1970s . Around 1981 he moved to Sachsenring Zwickau (the predecessor of today's FSV Zwickau ), around 1988 he entered the GDR Oberliga for Stahl Finow . In 1983 he was GDR champion in singles and doubles with Andreas Mühlfeld . He reached the final seven times:

  • 1974 Individual defeat against Diethelm Bessert
  • 1981 final in doubles (with Andreas Mühlfeld) and in mixed (with Karin Kromnik )
  • 1985 final in doubles (with Andreas Mühlfeld)
  • 1987 individual defeat against Andreas Mühlfeld
  • 1988 final in doubles (with Siegmar Bessert)
  • 1990 mixed final (with Kathrin Ziesche)

In the 1st DTTV ranking tournament in Zwickau in 1976, he finished first. From 1985 to 1986 he played at BMK Ost IB Fürstenwalde , then he joined SV Stahl Finow , with whose men's team he won the GDR championship three times in a row from 1987 to 1989.

Thiel was appointed to the GDR national team several times, around 1976 in international matches against Poland.

Later he took part in numerous senior tournaments. He won a total of 10 titles at the German senior championships until 2009. Together with Gerd Werner he became senior European champion in the 50+ doubles in 2009 and third in the 60+ championship double in 2014. At the 2018 World Cup he won in the age group over 65 in doubles with Petr Polak (Czech Republic), in the singles he reached the final.

A few other club stations after 1990 were Tennis Borussia Berlin (from 1991), Marzahner Tischtennisverein (MTTV) "Violetta" (around 1997), Blau-Weiß Petershagen (around 2001 to 2006) and CFC Hertha 06 (around 2008 to today (2016)) .
