German table tennis championship 2008
The 76th National German Individual Championships took place from March 28th to 30th, 2008 in the Hamburg sports hall . The Hanseatic city was the venue for the championships for the third time after 1933 and 1980.
While Tanja Hain-Hofmann from 3B Berlin came out on top for the first time in the absence of the two top players Wu Jiaduo and Nicole Struse , the unseeded Yang Lei from ASV Grünwettersbach caused big surprises for the men . After the native Chinese only finished second in his preliminary group, he safely survived the first main round. Then he managed the first big bang in the round of 16 when he threw old master Jörg Roßkopf 4-2 out of the competition. After a smooth 4-0 win over Nico ChristThis was followed in the semifinals by the sensation par excellence when Yang defeated the world number five and eight times German champion Timo Boll in seven sets (9:11, 11: 9, 3:11, 12:10, 11: 5, 6:11, 11: 7) . Only in the final did he have to admit defeat just as narrowly to Torben Wosik ( Angers Vaillante TT ). He already had a match point there when Wosik made a wrong serve in the sixth set with a score of 9: 9. For Wosik it was the second championship title nine years after the success in Augsburg.
There were competitions in singles and doubles for women and men. A mixed competition did not take place. Both singles and doubles were played over four winning sets. Before the knockout games, individual group games were played over three sets of wins, in which the players placed lower in the German rankings could qualify for the main field of the best 32 players.
