Brjatschislaw von Polotsk ( Belarusian Брачыслаў Ізяславіч , Russian Брячисла́в Изясла́вич , Old Icelandic Vartilafr; * around 997; † 1044 ) was Prince of Polotsk (1003-1044).

Surname

Bryachislav was probably an Old Russian variant of the Czech name Vratislav .

Life

Brjatschislav was a son of Prince Isjaslav of Polotsk and grandson of Vladimir the Great and Rogneda . His mother's name is not known. He was born around 997.

In 1001 his father died, in 1003 his brother Wseslaw. After that, Brjachislav became Prince of Polotsk. In 1015 he received Lutsk after the death of his grandfather .

In 1020 he attacked Novgorod . Yaroslav the Wise beat him on his way back in the battle of the Sudoma. The following year he was awarded a peace treaty Vitebsk and Uswjat. In the following years there was also a distance to Yaroslav.

Brjatschislav was probably the founder of the city of Brjatschislavl ( Braslau ).

He died in Polotsk in 1044.
