Jeong Sang-eun (born April 2, 1990 ) is a South Korean table tennis player . He won the individual silver medal at the Asian Championships in 2017 . He is right-handed and uses the European shakehand style .

Career

The South Korean made his first international appearance among adults in 2013, when he reached the round of 16 at the Kuwait Open.

At the German Open he beat Sathiyan Gnanasekaran in qualification . He was also able to beat top player Simon Gauzy at the Brazilian Open and thus improved by over 150 places in the world rankings .

Further appearances followed in 2014 at the China Open, where he met world champion Zhang Jike in the round of 16 , but had to admit defeat 0-4. At the Qatar Open he was able to reach the round of 16 in the singles, Jeong was able to beat Michael Maze, among others .

At the Asian Games in the same year he was able to win the silver medal with the team, in the final they were defeated by China . He himself met Zhang Jike again in the singles, this time only losing 2-4.

In 2015 he took part in the doubles competition at the Korea Open with Lee Sang-su . Here they made it to the semi-finals, in the individual he lost in the round of 32. At the Qatar Open he surprisingly had to admit defeat to Andrej Gaćina , but with the team at the World Team Cup Taiwan he beat Taiwan and thus made it to the semi-finals. Here, however, the eventual runner-up ( Japan ) ended. At the Hungary Open he was able to move into a World Tour final for the first time, but had to admit defeat to Jiang Tianyi 5-11 in the decisive set .

In 2016 he took part only a little in other international tournaments, but was able to reach the quarter-finals with the team at the World Cup . Here they surprisingly lost to England with 2-3.

In 2017 Jeong had his international breakthrough: At the Asian Cup in Wuxi, east China, he met world and Olympic champion Ma Long in the third round , who had not lost to a foreigner for five and a half years. Jeong surprisingly beat Ma Long 3-1, in the semifinals he also put Kōki Niwa in their place, in the final Jeong lost to Fan Zhendong without a chance .

In 2018 he took part in the Korea Open, but had to admit defeat to Jang Woojin in the quarterfinals . In the second round of the World Cup he met shooting star Tomokazu Harimoto and lost.
