history

The history of table tennis in Japan begins in 1902 when the sports educator Gendō Tsuboi , also a pioneer of Japanese football and other sports, brought back a net, racket and ball from a trip to Europe and began reproducing in Japan on an experimental basis.

The Japanese table tennis association emerges from two associations. In 1924 the soft table tennis association was founded, which was later renamed the hard table tennis association . In 1933 the Japanese Table Tennis Student Association was established in parallel . He played according to his own rules, which differed from the world association ITTF . The net was 17 cm high (instead of 17.5 cm), the ball weighed around two grams (instead of 2.4 to 2.53 grams at the time) and a set ended after 11 points (instead of 21 points at the time). These associations later united.

In 1928 Japan's TT President Hisao Kido applied for membership in the world association ITTF. The ITTF approved this application in 1929, and Japan became a "provisional member". After the Second World War Japan was initially not a member, it was not until 1950 that it was integrated as a "good standing" member.

As early as 1936 Japan unsuccessfully proposed that table tennis be recognized as an Olympic sport. In 1952 Japan took part in a table tennis world championship for the first time , winning four gold and one bronze medal. In the 1950s and 1960s, Japan was the world's leading table tennis nation, as evidenced by winning 44 world championship titles between 1952 and 1971. After that, China sat down at the table tennis tip.

(According to the association, the first presidents (initially of the predecessor association Nihon Takkyūkai, founded in 1931 ) were: 宇 佐川 知 義 (Usagawa Tomoyoshi / Tomonori / Chiyoshi /?) 1931-1946, 沼 正治 (Numa Seiji / Shōji / Tadaharu /?) 1947, 岡本 清 纓 (Okamoto Kiyofusa) 1948 and 清 瀬 三郎 (Kiyose Saburō) 1949–1953. A 城 戸 尚 夫 (presumably the same Kido Hisao; reading or life data but not verified) was therefore one of the vice-presidents from 1949 to 1975) @1@ 2Template: Webachiv / IABot / www.jtta.or.jp
