Kim Song-i ( Korean 김송이; born August 10, 1994 in Pyongyang ) is a North Korean table tennis player . She won singles at the 2016 Olympic Games and bronze at the 2016 and 2018 World Championships with the team.
Career
Kim Song-i was seen on the international stage at the age of 16, at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games she reached the quarter-finals in the individual and 4th place with the team, moving up to 121st place in the world rankings .
At the China Open 2013 she reached the semi-finals in the U-21 competition and thus won her first medal on the World Tour . At the Asian Games in 2014 , she won bronze with the team.
In 2015 she took part in the Asian Cup and the Pyongyang and China Open, where she defeated the top 10 player Mima Itō . In 2016 she was nominated third at the team world championships in Malaysia with the North Korean team and then for the Olympic Games .
Here she lost in the singles only in the semifinals against the reigning world champion Ding Ning , she was able to beat Yu Mengyu and the top 10 players Kasumi Ishikawa and Ai Fukuhara , so that she won bronze. This month she improved to number 26 in the world rankings.
At the Pyongyang Open in the same year she made it to the finals, where she defeated Ri Myong-sun , who also played defensively , and also won gold in doubles. In 2017 she made it to the round of 16 at the World Championships , where she lost to Liu Shiwen .
In 2018 she reached the semi-finals with the Korean team at the Team World Cup , where North Korea had to let China go first. In September she received the wildcard for her first participation in the World Cup , in which she reached the round of 16.
