Adriana Díaz (born October 31, 2000 in Utuado ) is a Puerto Rican table tennis player . She took part in the 2016 Olympic Games and won gold at the Pan American Cup, the Pan American Championships and the Pan American Games.

Career

Díaz had her first international appearance in 2009 at the China Junior and Cadet Open, further participation in youth tournaments followed from 2011. In the following year she took part for the first time in the Youth Latin American Championship, where she won the titles in individual, mixed and team competitions could. In 2013 she won silver in singles and gold in doubles at the same competition and played her first adult tournament with the Latin American Championship. In the years that followed, she won numerous other medals at the Latin and Pan-American Youth Championships, and in the adult category she won one bronze and three silver medals at the 2015 Latin American Championships.

In February 2016, Díaz moved up to the top 100 in the world rankings - in March she was the top-ranked American player for the first time - and qualified at the age of 15 to participate in the individual competition at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. She was the first female table tennis player from Puerto Rico to participate in the Olympic Games. After a win against the Nigerian Funke Oshonaike , she was eliminated against the French woman Li Xue . In 2017 she became the Pan American individual champion, and after the introduction of the new world ranking calculation in January 2018, she jumped from 81st to 37th.

In 2019 she won the Pan American Cup and qualified for the World Cup , from which she was eliminated in the group stage. In addition, she won gold in singles, doubles (with her sister Melanie ) and team competitions as well as bronze in mixed at the Pan American Games . In 2020, Díaz finished in the top 20 of the world rankings for the first time and won the Pan American Cup for the second time.

Private

Adriana Díaz's cousin Brian Afanador was also represented at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. Her older sister Melanie Díaz is also one of Puerto Rico's top players.
