Giacomo Franzoni (also Jacopo Franzoni , Giacomo Franzone or Giacomo Fransoni ; * December 5, 1612 in Genoa , † December 19, 1697 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal and bishop of Camerino .

Life

The son of Marchese Anfrano Franzoni and his wife Girolama Fieschi came from a wealthy and influential Genoese noble family that had already produced several senators and doges of the Republic of Genoa . When he was sixteen, he decided to enter the clergy against the will of his family. He studied at the universities in Bologna and Padua , in Bologna he acquired the academic degree of Doctor iuris utriusque .

Pope Alexander VII appointed him cardinal on April 29, 1658. On April 19, 1660 he became cardinal deacon of Santa Maria in Aquiro . On June 7 In 1666 he was appointed bishop of Camerino and received on 13 June 1666 by Neri Corsini the episcopal ordination ; Co- consecrators were Carlo de 'Vecchi , former Bishop of Chiusi , and Emilio Bonaventura Altieri , former Bishop of Camerino. On January 14, 1669 he became cardinal deacon of Santa Maria in Cosmedin . Raised Cardinal Priest of San Pancrazio on May 14, 1670 , he was appointed Cardinal Priest of Santa Maria in Ara Coeli on February 27, 1673 and Cardinal Priest of Santa Maria della Pace on April 30, 1685 . On November 10, 1687, he became Cardinal Bishop of Frascati . On September 28, 1693 he took over the diocese of Porto-Santa Rufina and became its cardinal bishop. Before November 23, 1693 he resigned as Bishop of Camerino.

He died after an eighteen month illness and was buried at his express request in the Roman church of Santa Maria in Vallicella , which was to express his devotion to St. Filippo Neri .
