Troy Amos-Ross (* 17th July 1975 in Georgetown , Guyana ) is a former Canadian boxer in the cruiserweight division .

Amateur career

From 1996 to 2000 he was Canadian light heavyweight champion five times in a row, having won the Copenhagen Cup in Denmark in 1994 and the Tammer tournament in Finland in 1995 . At the 1995 World Championships in Berlin , he defeated Romal Tagijew in the preliminary round, but was eliminated in the round of 16 against Dihosvany Vega.

In 1996 he won the American Olympic qualification by defeating Ronn Rodgers and Enrique Flores and started at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta . There he defeated Roland Raforme and Paul Mbongo before he was eliminated in the quarterfinals against Vasily Schirow in 6th place.

In 1997 he won the silver medal at the Francophone Games , but lost in the first fight of the 1997 World Championships in Budapest against Torsten Bengtson.

At the Panamerican Tournament 1998 he defeated Ramiro Reducindo, winner of the Pan American Games 2003, and Yurkis Sterling, junior runner-up in 1996, which he achieved the gold medal. Professional career

From 2001 to 2012 Troy Ross boxed as a professional and won 25 of 28 fights, 16 of them prematurely. In May 2005 he was Canadian cruiserweight champion by an early win against Claudio Rîșco, who had won a bronze medal at the 2001 Amateur World Cup. In March 2007, he won the Commonwealth Cruiserweight Title by knocking out reigning British champions John Keeton in the second round.

In 2009 he was a participant in the fourth season of The Contender , a reality TV series in which selected boxers are introduced and compete in an elimination process in the ring. Ross won the tournament, which took place in Singapore from January to February 2009 , by beating Lawrence Tauasa, Felix Cora, Akinyemi Laleye and Ehinomen Ehikhamenor. In June 2009 he again beat the amateur world champion Michael Simms , whom he had defeated as an amateur in 2000.

After he was already listed by Ring Magazine among the ten best boxers in the world, he received a cruiserweight championship chance on June 5, 2010 in Neubrandenburg, Germany . He boxed against Steve Cunningham for the vacant IBF title and was able to get a knockdown in the fourth round. However, he had suffered a cut injury in the area of ​​the left eye, which led to a controversial termination of the fight and a TKO victory for Cunningham during the break for the fifth round.

On September 15, 2012 he boxed again for the IBF title, this time against Yoan Hernández , who defeated Cunningham in October 2011 and had also beaten in the rematch four months later. Ross lost the fight in Bamberg, Germany, unanimously on points. This was also his last boxing match.

His father Charles Amos was also a boxer and represented Guyana at the 1968 Olympic Games . Troy Ross is also a cousin of boxer Egerton Marcus , who won the silver medal in the middleweight division for Canada at the 1988 Olympic Games .
