Andrzej Fonfara K. (* 4. November 1987 in Radom ) is a retired Polish professional boxer in light heavyweight .

Boxing career

Andrzej Fonfara started boxing in the boxing department of Gwardia Warszawa and was trained by Jerzy Rybicki , Krzysztof Kosedowski and Paweł Skrzecz , among others . As an amateur, he was Polish junior light welterweight champion in 2005 and was a participant in the 2004 European Cadet Championships in Russia and the 2005 European Junior Championships in Estonia.

In June 2006 he made his debut as a professional with a points win against the Slovak Miroslav Kubik. He then got the opportunity to train in the USA and then moved with his family to Chicago . In his following 15 fights he achieved 12 wins, two defeats and one worthless judgment. This came about in June 2009 against Skylar Thompson when he tested positive for a steroid after a tKo win. That year he also signed with the promotion company 8 Count Productions .

He then won 13 fights in a row, 12 of them prematurely. He defeated the former world champions Byron Mitchell , Glen Johnson and Gabriel Campillo and became US champion ( USBO ), North American champion ( WBO ), youth world champion of the WBC and world champion of the IBO .

On May 24, 2014, he boxed for the WBC world title against Adonis Stevenson in Canada . He suffered two knockdowns in rounds 1 and 5, but achieved a knockdown himself in round 9 and only lost after the full twelve rounds by deciding on points (109: 116 and twice 110: 115). In November 2014, he defeated the Frenchman Doudou Ngumbu unanimously on points.

On April 18, 2015, he surprisingly defeated the Mexican Julio Chávez (balance: 48-1, 32 knockout) by tKo in the ninth round and thus became International Champion of the WBC. Chavez gave up the fight after heavy hits and a knockdown in the break for the tenth round.

On October 16, 2015, he boxed in Chicago against the British Nathan Cleverly , former WBO light heavyweight title holder. Fonfara won over twelve rounds unanimously on points and thus defended his international title of the WBC.

On June 18, 2016, he surprisingly lost to Joe Smith by TKo in the first round . He played his next fight on March 4, 2017 against Chad Dawson and won early in the tenth round.

On June 3, 2017, he played a rematch against Adonis Stevenson , which also involved the WBC world light heavyweight title. Fonfara lost the fight in Montreal, Canada to a technical knockout in the second round. On June 16, 2018, he prematurely defeated the Ukrainian Ismajil Sillach .

In February 2019, Fonfara announced his resignation.
