Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (* 16th February 1986 in Culiacan , State of Sinaloa as Julio Cesar Chavez Carrasco ) is a Mexican professional boxer and former WBC world champion at middleweight.
His father is the former professional boxer and multiple world champion Julio César Chávez senior.
Boxing career
As an amateur boxer, he only played two fights on Mexican television against Jorge Páez junior, the son of former world boxing champion Jorge Páez senior .
On September 26, 2003, his professional career began with a unanimous victory over Jonathan Hernández. He had his first major opponent on February 28, 2004; he defeated the later Irish champion Oisin Fagan by unanimous victory on points. In his 24th fight on December 16, 2005, he reached his only draw against his compatriot and later IBF world champion Carlos Amado Molina . However, he defeated this in the rematch on points.
On August 19, 2006 he became the new WBC Junior World Champion in the light middleweight division when he defeated the American Jermaine White by technical knockout in the 4th round. On December 16, 2006, there was a unanimous victory on points against the eventual Mexican champion Cristian Solano, and on December 1, 2007 a knockout victory in round 6 over the former WBC junior world champion Ray Sanchez.
On February 9, 2008 he won the American continent title of the WBC in the light middleweight division by technical knockout in the 8th round over José Celaya and defended the title on April 26th by knockout in the 9th round against the Italian champions Tobia Loriga. On March 28, 2009, the Latino title of the WBC followed with a unanimous victory over the undefeated (23-0) Argentine Luciano Cuello. In the title defense on September 12th, he won by technical knockout in round 1 over the Briton Jason LeHoullier.
His fight against the US-American Troy Rowland on November 14, 2009 was not valued, because after the fight at Chavez an illegal substance for weight gain was detected. He had won the fight itself unanimously and clearly on points. On June 26, 2010 he secured the silver title of the WBC in the middleweight division, by unanimously winning points against John Duddy and defended him on January 29, 2011 by unanimous victory over former world championship challenger Billy Lyell.
On June 4, 2011 Chavez finally got after 44 professional fights in which he remained undefeated, the chance to box for the world title of the WBC. Reason for the late World Cup chance were u. a. the fairly safe selection of his internationally mostly unknown opponents. In the world championship fight he faced the unbeaten, in 30 professional fights, reigning WBC middleweight world champion, the German Sebastian Zbik . He had received the world championship belt without a fight after the title holder Sergio Gabriel Martínez did not defend his title. Zbik thus denied his first title defense against Chavez. Julio Chavez finally won the fight clearly on points and became the new WBC middleweight world champion.
On November 19, 2011 he defended the title for the first time against Peter Manfredo (37-6) and won through tKo in round 5. In February 2012 he also defended the title unanimously on points against Marco Antonio Rubio (53-3). In June 2012 he was also able to defeat Andy Lee (28-1) from Ireland prematurely.
On September 15, 2012, however, he lost to world number one Sergio Gabriel Martínez (49-2) on points, but had the Argentine on the floor in the twelfth round. After the fight, he tested positive for cannabis and banned him for nine months. In September 2013 he won unanimously against Brian Vera (23-6) and also won the rematch six months later.
In April 2015 he lost prematurely to Andrzej Fonfara from Poland (26-3). In July 2015, he defeated Marcos Reyes (33-2) by unanimous decision on points. In December 2016 he beat Dominik Britsch (32-2).
In May 2017 he boxed against Saúl Álvarez (48-1) and lost by unanimous decision. In December 2019, he was also lost prematurely to Daniel Jacobs (35-3).
For refusing to undergo a doping test, Chavez was banned indefinitely from the boxing organizations Nevada Athletic Commission and Arizona Boxing and MMA Commission in 2020 .
