Marco Antonio Rubio (born June 16, 1980 in Gómez Palacio , Durango , Mexico ) is a former Mexican professional boxer.

Boxing career

Rubio was a professional boxer since 2000 and spent the beginning of his career in Mexico , where he was able to achieve his first successes in the light middleweight division .

In 2004 he made his first appearance in the USA and got the chance to compete against Kofi Jantuah in a WBC middleweight eliminator . However, Jantuah won this fight by a knockout in the first round after he hit Rubio with a left hook from which Rubio could no longer recover.

Two years later, Rubio got another chance to compete in a WBC eliminator. On May 6, 2006 he competed against former IBF World Champion Kassim Ouma . This time Rubio was able to record a knockdown for himself in the first round. Ouma recovered, however, and was able to continue the fight for twelve rounds. Rubio lost that fight on points, with two judges voting against him and one for him.

In the period that followed, Rubio boxed more and more in Mexico, until in 2008 he was once again attracted by the chance of a WBC elimination match in the USA . He competed on October 18, 2008 against his compatriot Enrique Ornelas in Atlantic City . This fight should also end with a split point judgment, but this time with the happier end for Rubio for the two referees. With this Rubio had secured the chance of a fight with the reigning World Boxing Council and WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik . The fight took place on February 21, 2009 in Youngstown, Ohio . It was a one-sided fight, however, so Rubio's corner threw in the towel in the ninth round.

Rubio then boxed again in his home country of Mexico, where he also rose to the super middleweight division. However, he returned to the middleweight division and fought David Lemieux in Montreal , Canada in 2011 . He won this fight with a technical knockout in the seventh round and thus secured the right to challenge the winner of the fight between Sebastian Zbik and Julio César Chávez junior for the world championship title of the WBC . Chavez was able to win a narrow, controversial point victory against Zbik.

The fight against Julio César Chávez junior for the WBC world middleweight title took place on February 4, 2012 in San Antonio . Rubio clearly lost the fight on points. Through victories and a. against Jorge Lugo, Carlos Baldomir and Domenico Spada he was allowed to box again for the world championship in the middleweight division in October 2014. However, he lost in the fight for the titles of the WBA and IBO by knockout in the second round against Gennady Golovkin . He played his last fight in September 2015 against Anthony Dirrell , Rubio lost on points.
