Joe Smith Jr. (* 20th September 1989 on Long Iceland , New York , USA ) is an American boxer in the light heavyweight division .

Amateur career

Joe Smith began boxing at the age of 13 and played around 50 fights as an amateur, winning several tournaments in New York.

Professional career

Smith began his professional career in 2009. He is promoted by Joe DeGuardia's STAR Boxing and coached by Gerard Capobianco. He was particularly convincing through his clout when he won his first six fights all by knockout within two rounds. In August 2010, Smith suffered his first defeat, he lost in a six-round battle against Eddie Caminero in the fourth round by technical knockout.

He then won again 15 fights in a row, 11 of them prematurely, and boxed on June 18, 2016 against Andrzej Fonfara from Poland for the international belt of the WBC. This fight, which the American won in round one through TKo, was scheduled for 10 rounds. His win against the highly regarded Fonfara, who boxed for the WBC world title in 2014 and then defeated Julio Chávez and Nathan Cleverly , was voted the surprise of the year by Ring Magazine .

Against Bernard Hopkins , who was long past his prime but was still regarded as a respected opponent, Smith defended that title in December of the same year in a twelve-round fight with a classic knockout in the eighth round.

On July 15, 2017, Smith lost unanimously on points to Cuban Sullivan Barrera .
