The coking plant in Zdzieszowice

Zdzieszowice [ ˌʑd͡ʑɛʃɔˈvit͡sɛ ] (German Deschowitz , 1936–45: Odertal OS ) is a town with about 12,000 inhabitants in the powiat Krapkowicki , Opole Voivodeship in Poland . The city is the seat of the town-and-country municipality of the same name with around 16,000 inhabitants. It is located on the Oder between Kędzierzyn-Koźle and Krapkowice .

history

Deschowitz was an old transshipment point for the Oderschifffahrt. Here the calamine from the Upper Silesian mines was stored as well as the products of the ironworks on the Malapane and the salt brought over the Oder .

In the village, which is five kilometers southwest of St. Annaberg , during the Polish usurpant uprisings Wojciech Korfantys between 1919 and 1921 fierce battles took place between the Freikorps , the Black Reichswehr and insurgents.

In 1931 the large-scale coking plant and an electricity plant of the Schaffgotsch -Werke were established in Deschowitz . In 1938 a fuel synthesis plant was added. In 1944, 2,100 people worked in these plants.

Because of these industrial facilities, Deschowitz was the target of heavy air raids in the second half of 1944. Until 1945 the place belonged to the district of Groß Strehlitz .

In 1951, the damage caused by the Second World War was so far removed that production could be resumed.

Zdzieszowice, which had been a town-like settlement since 1956, received town charter in 1962.

For almost forty years, from 1976 to 2014, the German-born politician Dieter Przewdzing (1944–2014) headed the city and community. As a representative of the PVAP he was the administratively appointed mayor ( naczelnik gminy ) until the political change in 1989 and after the restoration of the local constitution in 1990 he was mayor until his death. He won the mayoral elections five times in the first round, only in 2010 he had to stand in the runoff. This made him the longest-serving mayor in Poland. In the last years of his life, Przewdzing was committed to strengthening the economic independence of the Upper Silesian communities and was therefore known nationwide. On February 18, 2014, he was murdered by unknown persons. The investigators do not rule out a political background for the crime.
