Hugo Hernán Garay (born November 27, 1980 in Tigre , Argentina ) is a professional boxer from Argentina and a former WBA world light heavyweight champion.

Amateur career

In 1998 Hugo Garay took second place in the light heavyweight division at the Junior World Championships held in Buenos Aires , where he lost to Cuban Yohanson Martínez on points in the final. At the Pan American Games in 1999 in Winnipeg (Canada), he finished third. Garay took part in the Olympic Games in Sydney for Argentina in 2000 , but was eliminated there in the first round of the tournament due to an abandonment defeat against Kazakh Olschas Orasalijew.

Professional career

Hugo Garay began his professional career in July 2001. On November 6, 2003, he defeated the Romanian Alejandro Lakatos in a knockout match for the WBO Association by technical knockout in the twelfth round and thus qualified for a world championship fight against WBO title holder Zsolt Erdei . The fight against the Hungarians took place on May 8, 2004 in Dortmund and was only narrowly and controversially won by Erdei on points. In the following rematch on February 26, 2005, Erdei was only able to prevail with 2-1 judge votes.

His third defeat he suffered due to a disqualification for hitting after the end of the round against his compatriot Franco Raúl Sánchez in October 2007. Nevertheless, Garay was named the challenger for the WBA world champion Danny Green in 2008. Green ended his career a little later, however, so that Garay boxed on July 3, 2008 against the European light heavyweight champion, Juri Baraschian from the Ukraine , in Buenos Aires for the vacant WBA title and won the title over twelve rounds on points. In his first title defense, he defeated Jürgen Brähmer on points in the Rostock city hall . Since the end of 2008 he has been under contract with Universum Box-Promotion . Completely surprising, however, Garay lost the title in his second title defense on June 20, 2009 in Santa Fe (Argentina) due to a point defeat by the Spaniard Gabriel Campillo.

On July 16, 2011 he boxed against Marco Huck for his WBO world title. After a very fast-paced and action-packed fight, in which he brought Huck into distress several times, he finally lost after a punch from Huck by knockout in the 10th round.

Garay's last professional fight so far was on October 14, 2011 in Buenos Aires, Argentina against the Argentine Cesar David Crenz. He lost to technical knockouts in round 5.
