Pietro Aurino (born November 16, 1976 in Torre Annunziata , Italy ) is a former Italian professional cruiserweight boxer .
Amateur career
Aurino won the 1992 European Cadet Championships in Roseto ( light middleweight), in 1994 the Junior World Championships in Istanbul (light heavyweight), in 1995 the CISM military world championships in Rome (light heavyweight), and in 1996 the European championships in Vejle (light heavyweight). He also defeated the world champion Ramón Garbey at a tournament in Bulgaria in 1996 .
At the 1995 World Championships in Berlin , he was only eliminated in the quarter-finals, in the fight for a place in the medal ranks, just 7: 7+ against the eventual world champion Antonio Tarver . At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta he was defeated in the round of 16 against later Olympic champion Vasily Schirow .
In addition, he was Italian champion from 1993 to 1996.
Professional career
Pietro Aurino made his professional debut on August 9, 1997 and played his last fight on March 25, 2017. He became Italian champion in 1998 and was able to defend the title twice. On April 8, 2000 he boxed in London for the WBO world cruiserweight championship, but lost to Johnny Nelson . In 2001 he was again Italian champion.
On November 3, 2001, he boxed in Lübeck against Juan Gómez for the WBC cruiserweight championship, but lost after four knockdowns by TKO in the sixth round. On November 5, 2002 he won the EBU -European Cruiserweight Championship by TKO against the French champion Turan Bağcı and defended the title against his compatriot Vincenzo Rossitto and the Dane Jesper Kristiansen. On December 18, 2004, he secured the WBC's international light heavyweight title with an early win against Joseph Marwa and also defeated Zoltán Béres in another fight .
On December 16, 2006, he boxed against Marco Huck in Kempten . In the second round there was mutual unsportsmanlike behavior, which led to a point deduction against Aurino. Angry about it, he left the ring for a short time and lost due to the applicable rules by giving up.
From 2008 to 2016, he served an eight-year prison sentence for drug and weapon offenses in connection with the Gionta clan.
Aurino only fought three more fights after his release and ended his career. In 2019, Aurino was arrested again for drug offenses.
