Avni Yıldırım (born August 5, 1991 in Sivas ) is a Turkish professional boxer in the super middleweight division .

Amateur career

Avni Yıldırım boxed at Fenerbahçe Istanbul , won 112 of 132 amateur fights and is five-time Turkish champion, winner of the Ahmet Cömert tournament in 2013, bronze medalist at the 2013 Mediterranean Games and participant in the 2013 World Championships . Opponents of his career included Wang Xuanxuan , Victor Cotiujanschi , Pawel Siljagin , Warren Baister , Babacar Kamara , Abdelhafid Benchabla , Enrico Kölling and Nikita Iwanow .

Professional career

Avni Yıldırım made his professional light heavyweight debut on March 22, 2014 in Tekirdağ, Turkey . Ahmet Öner became his promoter . In his only sixth fight he defeated the former world champion Glen Johnson unanimously on points in Miami and was thereby "International Silver" title holder of the WBC . He defended the title against Bernard Donfack and united it with a win against Janne Forsman (balance: 21-1) with the "Eurasia Pacific" title of the WBC. In title defense, he defeated Walter Sequeira in February 2016 and Jackson Junior in May 2016.

In mid-2016, Yıldırım switched to the super middleweight division and won four development fights in Germany before winning the “International Silver” title in this weight class prematurely through TKo against Schiller Hyppolite (21-1) in November 2016. In a title defense in February 2017, he defeated Aliaksandr Sushchyts (21-3) by knockout.

In May 2017 he boxed against Marco Peribán (25-3) in Mexico , won unanimously on points and secured the “International” title of the WBC. The fight was also the final WBC World Cup elimination duel. For September a world championship fight for the vacant WBC title was planned, with Yıldırım boxing against the winner from this encounter for the world championship. After the pairing of opponents in this fight had changed several times, David Benavidez secured the title against Ronald Gavril on September 8th .

However, it was announced in July 2017 that Avni Yıldırım will take part in the World Boxing Super Series and will meet Chris Eubank junior (25-1) on October 7, 2017 , against whom he will fight for the IBO world title . In the fight held in Stuttgart Yıldırım lost by knockout in the third round.

On March 3, 2018, he defeated Derek Edwards (27-7) in the fight for the "International" title of the WBC unanimously on points. In May 2018 he won a title defense against the Canadian Ryan Ford (14-2). For July 2018, Yıldırım was ranked 5th in the world challenger rankings by the WBC and 7th by the WBA . On September 15, 2018, in a final WBC elimination match, he defeated the Dane Lolenga Mock, who had previously been unbeaten in eleven fights, and was again the “International Champion” of the WBC.

On February 23, 2019, he was able to fight Anthony Dirrell (32-1) for the vacant WBC world title in Minneapolis , but lost due to a technical decision in the tenth round. Due to an unintentional collision with the heads, a cut injury to Dirrell's left eye opened in the seventh round, which in the tenth round led to the fight being stopped and the score sheet being evaluated. Two of the judges had Dirrell just ahead with 96:94, while the third judge Yıldırım had 98:92 in the lead.
