Jonas Junias Jonas (born November 24, 1993 in Swakopmund ) is a Namibian boxer . He is the reigning African welterweight champion .
Career
Jonas Junias won the silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Scotland in 2014 . After victories against Aamir Khan, Charles Lumbwe, Leroy Hindley and Sean Duffy, he was only defeated in the final against Josh Taylor .
In 2015 he also won silver at the African Games in the Republic of the Congo when he advanced to the final against Adilson Justino, Babou Smaila, Richarno Colin and Eslam Aly and lost there just 2-1 to Abdelkader Chadi .
With wins against Jessie Lartey, Eslam Aly, Badesse Bahiru, Babou Smaila and Hamza El-Barbari, he got out of first place in the 2016 African Olympic qualification in Cameroon and then took part in the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil , where he was in the first fight knocked out against Hassan Amzile . He was also the flag bearer of the Namibian Olympic team.
He finished the 2017 African Championships in the Republic of the Congo with the gold medal after beating Hermany Gomes, Richarno Colin , Shadir Musa, Dival Malonga and Eslam Aly.
Jonas won the gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia by defeating Rashield Williams, Valentin Kondakov, Dinindu Saparamadu, Luke McCormack and Thomas Blumenfeld. He finished the 2019 African Games in Morocco by winning a bronze medal after being knocked out 3-2 against Abdelhaq Nadir in the semi-finals.
arrest
Jonas was arrested during the 2016 Olympic Games on suspicion of sexual harassment of an employee of the Olympic Village and was in the custody of the Namibian embassy in Brazil for around nine months on bail. It was not until April 2017 that the court allowed him to leave the country until the end of the proceedings.
