Clement Quartey
Clement "Ike" Quartey (born April 12, 1938 in Accra ; also Isaac Quartey ) is a former boxer from Ghana .
After Ghana became independent in 1957, thirteen Ghanaian athletes took part in the Olympic Games for the first time in 1960 under the name Ghana , after seven athletes competed in Helsinki in 1952 under the name Gold Coast .
Clement Quartey appeared in Rome in the light welterweight (class up to 63.5 kg) of the boxing tournament. He defeated the Moroccan Boubekeur and the Iraqi Karkhi 5-0 on points. In the quarterfinals he won against the Korean Kim with 3-2 judges' votes. The semifinals were canceled for Quartey after the Pole Marian Kasprzyk failed to play. Only in the final did Quartey meet an opponent from Europe. Bohumil Němeček from Czechoslovakia had beaten the American Quincey Daniels 5-0 in the other semifinals . In the final Němeček was technically clearly superior, Quartey could be seen that he had little international experience and so the result was clearly 5-0 for Němeček.
The silver medal for Quartey was the first ever Olympic medal for a black African athlete. Until today (as of 2013) no Ghanaian except Quartey could win gold or silver at the Olympic Games. In 1962, Clement Quartey won the title at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Perth . His brother Isufu, 31 years his junior, was named Ike Quartey under the same nickname as Clement Quartey , 1994 WBA world champion of professional welterweight boxers.
